The family
Hawaii Klass is bred by local breeder Allan Gilchrist and the 4th progeny from Youandi to come to Donald.
He is a half brother to the stable’s 7-time winner Harry Flashman and his
other siblings, bumper placed Robbie Dye and Mia Matriarch & winning hurdler Sam Patch, have been/are
also in training here at Dodlands Steading.
The dam, Youandi, is a full sister to winning hurdler Linngate who produced Linn’s Heir (a triple bumper winner).
Linn’s Heir has come to recent prominence as the dam of Lancashire Oaks winner Turbo Linn, Grade 2 winning hurdler
Ignotus and bumper winner & winning hurdler Bishop’s Heir.
About the sire
Classic Cliché
(bay horse, 1992) raced for 4 seasons from 2yr to 5yr, and won 6 (including 5 stakes)
races all told, at least one in each season from a total of 16 runs.
Top class, he was crowned Champion 3yr old stayer in Europe in 1995.
Trained by Henry Cecil as a juvenile, he moved to Godolphin as a 3yr old and raced the rest of his career
here, winning the St Leger, and the Ascot Gold Cup as a 4yr old.
He was retired to stud in 1998, where he is making his name as a dual purpose stallion.
Classic Cliché has sired over 60 individual winners (several at least useful) of over 150 races over
jumps to date, and with many more stock to come this number will rise sharply over the next
couple of seasons.
If Hawaii Klass hasn't quite yet managed to eclipse his first season of
hurdling in 2010-11, he still manages to give a tremendous thrill to
his owners each season when usually managing a win. He can
intersperse thrilling runs with some downright howlers but he's won
3 races all told and starts 2014-15 season on useful handicap marks
over both fences and hurdles.
Anyway, before he started on his fine hurdling form in early 2011,
Hawaii had been at Dodlands for a couple of seasons, giving no more
than encouraging signs in his bumper appearances. Showing us that he
was clearly suited by soft conditions, Hawaii finished third
at Newcastle on Eider Chase day, in a novice hurdle.
A month later, in mid March 2011, Hawaii ran a cracker to win a
well-contested novice hurdle at Carlisle over 2½ miles, with Wilson
Renwick in the saddle, before finishing that season, running second
in a Class 3 handicap hurdle off 112 over an extended 2m 6f in
April.
The gelding has taken a little bit of time to find his form over
fences, but in the spring of 2013, he put in a series of fine
performances at Perth, winning at that venue in May. He
followed that up by running a further 3 fine races last season,
although his form did fall away from February onwards.
There's no doubt that
Hawaii is a quirky character these days, but possesses a fair amount
of ability. I'm sure we can coax him back to his best, mixing
hurdling and chasing.
