The family
Egon Spenglar is home bred by Donald from his own mare Wee Willow.
Wee Willow showed a fair amount of ability over hurdles winning once
and being placed 7 times. Her victory came at Sedgefield over an
extended 2m 5f.
However, the grand dam was Peak Princess, from whom Donald has bred and trained 3 winners namely
- Peter, a fair staying chased who won 5 times up to 3m 6f
- Wee Willow, see above
- Barney Rubble, a triple chase winner at around 3 miles
A fourth sibling Garcall won 3 point to points and was placed in 2 chases for Donald.
About the sire
River Falls (bay horse, b 1989).
Trained by Richard Hannon, River Falls raced for only 2 seasons (at 2yr and 3yr), and showed high class form as a 2yr old when he was campaigned over 6f and 7f. He won the Gimcrack Stakes (Group 2) at York, a racecourse which also saw River Falls gain his initial success.
Not quite as good at 3, he did though win a minor race over 8f.
Mainly regarded as a sire of 2yr olds, River Falls has also had fair success as a jumps sire, with Festival bumper winner Joe Cullen the best of his handful of winners.
Egon Spenglar is the second produce from our winning broodmare Wee
Willow and like his 'pal' Nearly May, he's been in and around Dodlands Steading since a foal.
We've given this fellow time to mature and we completed his education during the late summer and autumn of 2012. The rest of the
autumn, we commenced the training process with controlled cantering,
then steady progression onto the 'Up the Middle' gallop with his stablemates.
A few weeks down the line, and 'Achilles' was working upsides his
galloping companions, and showing us enough for us to mark out a route to
the racecourse. Then we deliberately put him away for a few months, to
mature and fill into his frame.
Roll forward to mid summer of the following year, and we brought the gelding back into Dodlands, and re-commenced the process of turning body fat into
muscle, and immaturity into increased confidence.
Egon Spenglar made his debut in a bumper in December of 2014, where
he raced quite freely early on and accordingly didn't quite see out
the trip. That said, he does give us the impression that he's more of a staying sort, so
we'll stick to these sort of distances over hurdles. He'll have a
few races this season over novice hurdles, and we'd like to see him
progress as he gains more experience.
