The family
This filly is the 5th foal out of the unraced mare Rose Vic, a
daughter of the excellent NH sire Old Vic, and a half sister to Paper Promise
and Paper Roses
who are
both in training at Dodlands Steading.
Paper Promise is a dual bumper winner and winning hurdler, while the
fair hurdler Paper Roses, although a maiden, has been runner up 6 times!
Rose Vic also has bumper/hurdle/chase winner Way Out West (b 2013 by
Westerner), bumper winner Everyonesgame (b 2017 by Jet Away) and
colts (b 2018) by Jet Away) &
(b 2020) by Lucky Speed.
The grand dam, Greek Melody, was placed in 4 bumpers before
prevailing in a similar event over 2½ miles at Dundalk in the
mid 90s. She followed that up with a 3rd place again over 2½
miles in her sole hurdle race. As a broodmare, she has bred 3
winners who all achieved black type - the mare Best Wait
(placed in a Royal Bond), Grade 3 placed Spartan Angel and Grade 1 placed Arrive Sir Clive.
The 3rd dam Kazama, placed in France, is an excellent
broodmare, with 7 individual winners from 8 foals. Best of these was
6-time winner Kiora, Group 3 placed on the level, Listed placed over
hurdles.
About the sire
Califet (bay horse, born 1998) raced for 4 seasons, running
from 2-4 years for Guy Cherel in France then, after finishing a
close up 4th in the 2002 Arc, joined Godolphin for a couple of
races as a 5 year old .
Winner of a Listed event as a 3 year old, Califet really blossomed at 4 winning a Group 3 over 12 furlongs at
Longchamp before winning a Group 2 again over 12 furlongs at
Saint-Cloud.
A sparely-made colt who improved with age, he was a high-class
racehorse, rated 126 by Timeform.
Retired to stud in 2005, Califet spent the first few years in France
before switching to Boardsmill Stud in Ireland in 2014. Sire of over
50 winners on the Flat and 150 (and rising) over jumps, his fee has
reflected his growing success as an NH Sire rising to €6,000 in
2019. A proven Grade 1 sire, his best progeny are Blue Dragon
(multiple Graded winner in France over hurdles and fences), Gordon
Elliott's Clarcam (Grade 1 winning chaser), and WP's Grade 1 winning
hurdler Cilaos Emery. Most recently his son Carriacou won the 2019
Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris.
Season 2022-23 outlook
'Emily' had a couple of runs in bumpers last season before squeezing
in a novice hurdle debut at the end of the season in April. Her
bumper run gave some encouragement to connections, although she did
seem to run a bit flat on hurdles bow when last of 5 at Hexham over
2½ miles.
Paper Tiger is a half sister to fairly useful hurdles/chaser Way
Out West (by Westerner) and a couple of fine mares who raced for the
yard in recent times - Paper Roses and Paper
Promise (both by Gamut). More recently, bumper winner Everyonesgame
(by Jet Away) goes into this season as a highly promising novice
hurdler. So she has quite a bit to do to hold up the family name.
She'll start off in novice hurdles and, once handicapped, would hope
to become competitive in small events in the North.
Profile
Having bought Paper Roses in 2014
and her full sister Paper Promise
two years later, it wouldn't have been difficult to imagine that, at
the Tattersalls (Ireland) August 2019 NH Store Sale, this filly - a
half sister to the 'Papers' - would be prominent on our Inspection
List.
As it turned out, it was late in the evening on Day 2 of the
3-day sale, that she entered the ring. She's a neat filly
but any notion we had of achieving an uncontested
acquisition proved groundless. She cost a wee bit more than we had planned but nevertheless ours was the
final bid at the fall of the hammer, and delighted we were too.
During the 2019-20 season, although slightly later than her peers, she
had the planned couple of weeks in the yard to gain experience of our morning
routine on the gallops. The initial period
entailed nothing more than a gentle canter each day, being led
'Up-the-Middle' by
one of her new stablemates.
She then spent most of the winter months with Greg Aitken in a local
yard,
as she strengthened and matured.
'Emily' returned to the yard mid August '20, where not unexpectedly she proved a wee bit of a handful for the early season work riders. We were patient with this nice, athletic filly as we know how much ability the family holds so we again roughed off the filly for the winter months for that season
