The family
Ellistrin Star is the first foal of dual hurdles winner Ellistrin
Belle who was also placed in a bumper. The dam also has a 2019
gelding by Clovis du Berlais and a 2021 filly by Frontiersman.
Ellistrin Belle is a daughter of the fine racemare Hannah Park
who as well as winning 3 times on the flat in Germany when trained
by Michael Bell, won a couple of handicap hurdles when trained by
the late Peter Monteith.
Hannah Park has proved an even more successful as a broodmare and
each of her progeny to see a racecourse has won, and all trained at
Dodlands Steading. Her Kayf Tara gelding King Kalium won a handicap
hurdle but the family star is most definitely Shades of Midnight.
The latter gelding won 5 times for the yard and after leaving gained
valuable black type for the family winning the Grade 2 Rendlesham
Hurdle in 2019.
As well as Hannah Park, second dam Wassl This Then has produced
another 2 winners, the sprinter De Tiger and flat winner/fair handicap hurdler Cat Five.
Wassl This Then herself was a dual flat winner over 1m 2f/1m 3f.
About the sire
Passing Glance (bay horse, born 1999) raced 27 times from 2 to 4
when trained by Ian Balding. A very smart miler, he won a Group 2
event in Germany at 3 and Epsom's Diomed Stakes at 4. A tall, leggy
colt, he was a genuine front runner, rated at best by Timeform at
118 and won 7 races being placed 12 times.
Passing Glance retired to stand at the National Stud in 2005 but
after just one season he moved to Pitchall Stud where he stood
beside Midnight Legend for several years. Still owned by the Holmes
family he moved nearby to Batsford Stud in 2017.
The son of Polar Falcon has developed into a useful National Hunt
sire in recent seasons although he does have a Group 1 winner on the
Flat to his credit in Side Glance who won the Mackinnon Stakes at
Flemington in 2013.
He is the sire of over 70 individual Jumps winners with his best
being Attaglance (Listed Hurdles winner), Fountains Windfall
(Grade 3 hurdles winner) and 2021 Betfair Ascot Chase (Grade 1)
winner Dashel Drasher.
His fee for 2022 was £3,000
Season 2022-23 outlook
Since joining Dodlands a couple of years back, "Bellini" has proved very much to be a stable favourite. Such a sweet filly and so nice to have around the yard.
Last season Ellistrin Star had a couple of outings for experience in bumpers but was perhaps a little bit disappointing in finishing down the field each time. She was probably a bit weak then but on her return to the yard after summer grass, Ellistrin Star does seem to have strengthened somewhat.
A neat filly, Ellistrin Star does have the pedigree to do well in the jumping game. She will be aimed for another bumper early on in the season, and we all hope she can do well.
Profile....
The dam of 'Bellini' - Ellistrin Belle - is owned by Ron & Eileen Smith having been bred by The Potassium Partnership, the syndicate
who also
acquired the dam Hannah Park post racing.
Ellistrin Belle was actually leased for racing to The Potassium
Partnership for a couple of seasons, before we trained Ellistrin
Belle for her owners Ron & Eileen Smith from the start of the
2014-15 season. And we were delighted to win a Sedgefield handicap
hurdle in November 2015 and follow up with a win in the
same race a year later.
The Smith's look after Hannah Park at their paddocks adjacent to
their home on the outskirts of Hawick, so had capacity and kept
Ellistrin Belle as a broodmare. She was sent to Passing Glance in
2016 and 'Bellini' is the resultant first foal.
Ellistrin Star was in training here at Dodlands for a few months in
the Spring of the 2020-21 season. She also had a spell in
the yard the previous year so she was well acquainted with the yard set up and
morning routing. However a racecourse appearance was not planned
that season but she continued working upsides the string in regular exercise.
