Off the mark for the season
It's not something that we pay that much attention to, but prior to last
Tuesday D W Whillans was probably on the Racing Post trainers' cold list.
So, it was even more pleasing when
Ellistrin Belle not only
broke her maiden tag, but got the yard off the mark for the season. It
was indeed a proud moment for owners and (part) breeders Ron & Eileen
Smith when their mare, under a fine tactical ride by Callum, prevailed
in a 4-runner handicap hurdle by 10 lengths at Sedgefield.
All manner of equine accoutrements have been applied at home to help the mare - probably the fastest horse in the yard - to settle in her morning gallops, and just for good measure we applied a first time tongue tie as well on the day. She goes well fresh, so it may be a few weeks before she runs again.

Newcastle last Friday
It was a mixed day for the yard on Friday at Newcastle. Shades of Midnight ran a bit green (as he had in his debut bumper) on his novice hurdle introduction, and from being bang in contention 3 out, faded a bit and was eased home by Callum. We'll look for better ground and maybe a bit further than the 2 miles he faced here.
Bollin Julie needed the race and blew up 3 out in her 3 mile handicap hurdle. She'll strip fitter next time.
