The family

This Sageburg gelding is the 6th foal of the Classic Cliché mare Your Place Or Mine who won an Irish bumper on debut.
Your Place Or Mine has bred just one winner so far, Irish hurdler Owl Creek Bridge (by Gold Well) although Point winner Classic Place (by Beneficial) did subsequently show promising form when placed in bumpers for WP and Noel Meade.

Grand-dam Tyrilda was unraced but in addition to Your Place Or Mine, she has bred another two winning horses. Tom George trained the fairly useful Sir Harry Lewis mare Saphire Night to 3 hurdle victories around the turn of the last decade. Another son, Badger, won a staying chase then followed up with 3 wins in Point-to-Points.

3rd dam, the French bred Timilda won on the Flat and over jumps in her native land and bred 2 winners. The most notable of these was Talego whose 4 wins included a couple of Listed chases at Auteuil as well as a Listed hurdle at that same French venue.

About the sire

Sageburg (grey horse, born 2004) was trained in France. Unraced as a 2 year old he ran the following season for Andre Favre winning a Listed race at Deauville over 10f.
A tall, leggy colt he switched stables to be trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre as a 4 year old and showed much improved form. Top class form, best of which was when winning the 9.3f Group 1 Prix d'Ispahan at Longchamp. He was highly strung on the racecourse, and while on breeding (dam won over 1½ miles) would have been expected to stay 12f, Sageburg was best at trips from 8-10 furlongs. Timeform rated 122.
Sageburg began his stud career in France in 2009 at Haras de la Gatine in Normandy for a fee of €3,000. During this first part of his stud career he sired well over 100 winners on the level headed by Group 2 winners Peace Burg, Si Sage and Spain Burg.
He is now better known as a jumps sire and switched to Garryrichard Stud in Ireland in 2015, where he has covered large books of mares each season. Best jumps progeny are Grade 2 winning hurdler Chi'tibello and Harry Whittington's Grade 2 winning hurdler Rouge Vif.

Season 2021-22 outlook

Undecided was a horse that we held particular high hopes for in 2020-21 as his home work was sparkling. And yet......

This Sageburg gelding made his bumper debut at Newcastle in early December '20 and there were stable expectations that he would run a big race. However, he finished 6th,  failing to pick up in the final 2 furlongs. That he followed this debut with couple of disappointing runs in the Spring could well have been due to the cloud that Dodlands Steading was under at the time but it can often be folly to search for excuses.

Anyway, Undecided had his summer break and is once again impressing the experienced work riders each morning!
He's a well-made gelding, not one to give up on and will improve for a step up in trip. Will go novice hurdling this season.

Previously....
In preparation for another foray into the addictive world of bloodstock sales, The Buyers Club CEO Mark 'Mouse' Young met his his fellow board members and compiled a long short-list - or was it a short long-list? - from the near 900 catalogued horses of the 2019 Tatts Ireland NH Store Sale.
There was the usual entourage of stable staff, owners, self-appointed bloodstock agents and hangers-on from Dodlands Steading spread across the arena and bar complex during the 3 days but with the short-list carefully guarded 'Mouse' and Callum set off on a tour of the stables.

Lots of legwork on Day 1 but apart from a couple of horses who would have put a strain on the budget, no bids were forthcoming. Similar story on Day 2 with close scrutiny of geldings by Yeats, Leading Light and Sageburg. And it was Lot 388, a good looking gelding by Sageburg that saw appointed bidder Callum succeed with a winning bid. Much to the delight of the on-lookers from afar!
An excellent purchase to race in the colours of The Buyers Club.

In August 2019, Kelso based handler Nick Orpwood took 'Tommy' and a couple of his fellow Irish Sales purchases straight away to complete their education.
A few weeks later and this gelding was back at Dodlands for his first spell in training, just 3 or 4 weeks for experience
He came back into the yard in the Spring of 2020, working upsides in the mornings all the while gaining strength and muscle tone before another couple of months at summer grass.

Waited with in rear, not always fluent, ridden after 4 out, dropped away out of contention from 3 out
This was Undecided's first run after a wind op although that was several months ago. He had schooled well at home but that wasn't always transferred to jumping the hurdles here. Frustrating, as he is one of our best work horses in the morning.

Close up, challenged 3f out, soon ridden but not keep pace with leaders
Undecided was ridden prominently but didn't seem to act on the drying ground. He kept on to the line though but was a bit off the pace.

Tracked leaders, lost position slightly 4f out, progress to chase leaders over 2f out, ridden and one pace
A debut run not without promise. Undecided travelled nicely just behind the leaders and ran slightly green when the pace was upped approaching the home bend. But he kept on nicely without being unduly knocked about to finish 6th. He'll have a break before reappearing in early Spring.
