The family
Macmidnight is the third progeny of the unraced - although in training with Mark Johnson - Rehlaat, who was bred by the Shadwell Farm organisation.
Rehlaat is the daughter of the listed winner on the flat
Judhoor, who was also third in the Rockingham Stakes. Judhoor has
bred 2 winners, whilst the 3rd dam Almorooj bred 6 winners.
However, without doubt the star attraction of the pedigree is the
4th dam, that top class racemare Al Bahathri, winner of the Irish
1000gns. But she proved even better as a broodmare, producing
numerous top class individuals such as Haafhd (now a successful
sire).
And Rehlaat has made a fair impact as a broodmare in her own
right, with Piergiorgio being a multiple winner in Italy at 2yrs and
3yrs. 2016 started with a bang for the mare, as her 2yr old by
Hellvelyn romped home by 4 lengths at The Curragh, the opening race
of the Irish flat season which was won in the past by Dawn Approach.
Phew!!
About the sire
Mawatheeq (bay horse, born 2005) was trained by Marcus Tregoning for the Maktoum family who also bred the horse.
Unraced at 2, he burst onto the scene when an impressive winner of a
competitive handicap over a mile in September of his 3yr old season.
And it was again in the autumn of his next season that he showed his
best, high class form winning a couple of races including a Group 3
before finishing a narrow second to Twice Over in the Champion
stakes (10 furlongs).
Mawatheeq was retired to stud in 2011, standing at Shadwell Farm. Although not prolific, he is the sire of over 20 winners on the flat in Europe, the best of which has probably been the filly Martiniquaise.
Mawatheeq hails from the last crop of that excellent sire of sires Danzig and his fee for 2016 is £2,000.
When Malcolm Imray of the Boswell's based Eildon Hills Stables paid £3,500 to acquire the 6yr old broodmare Rehlaat at Tattersalls in December 2011, the mare was already carrying the product of a mating with Mawatheeq. Born and raised at Eildon Hills, the likeable yearling 'Midnight' caught the eye of Scott and Alison of Star Racing (owners of Champagne Agent, Sam Bucket and Hawaii Klass - all trained at Dodlands).
With a flat career in mind, Macmidnight spent a couple of seasons with Richard Fahey, but suffered from growing pains and didn't actually make the racecourse. The filly was relocated to Dodlands last year and had a couple of runs on the flat for experience.
She didn't prove the easiest to keep sound last season - her earlier problems re-surfacing - but we've given the filly, who has strengthened quite considerably this year, all the time she required under our watchful eye at Dodlands during the winter.
She has been back in full work since the start of March, and is
going about her morning work with a fair amount of zeal. So, it
shouldn't be too long into the flat season till we see her on the
racecourse.
The sire was top class at 10 furlongs and the dam sire is by Swain,
a renowned source of stamina so we will look to start Macmidnight
off at a distance around a mile, and probably step up in trip as the
season progresses.
