The family
Ellistrin Bay is the second foal of dual hurdles winner Ellistrin
Belle who was also placed in a bumper.
The dam also has a striking 2021 filly by Frontiersman.
Ellistrin Belle is a daughter of the fine racemare Hannah Park
who as well as winning 3 times on the flat in Germany when trained
by Michael Bell, won a couple of handicap hurdles when trained by
the late Peter Monteith.
Hannah Park has proved an even more successful as a broodmare and
each of her progeny to see a racecourse has won, and all trained at
Dodlands Steading. Her Kayf Tara gelding King Kalium won a handicap
hurdle but the family star is most definitely Shades of Midnight.
The latter gelding won 5 times for the yard and after leaving gained
valuable black type for the family winning the Grade 2 Rendlesham
Hurdle in 2019.
As well as Hannah Park, second dam Wassl This Then has produced
another 2 winners, the sprinter De Tiger and flat winner/fair handicap hurdler Cat Five.
Wassl This Then herself was a dual flat winner over 1m 2f/1m 3f.
About the sire
Clovis du Berlais (bay horse, born 2011) was trained in France and ran exclusively at Auteuil during his two years racing over hurdles and fences. Just the one wins in each discipline he was nonetheless placed 3 times in Graded races over hurdles. Top rated at 141 by Timeform he clearly was useful but coupled with being a half brother to very useful hurdler/chaser Caid du Berlais, he was naturally a strong candidate as an NH Stallion.
Retired to stud in 2017, he stood at Yorton Farm for a couple of
years before relocating back to France and the Haras du Lion stud
where he is currently available for a fee of €2,500.
As at the start of 2023-24 season, Clovis du Berlais has sired 7
individual winners from a couple of dozen runners. Early days, and
his best progeny so far would be Nigel T-D's Bagheera Ginge and Alan
King's Gitche Gumee, both winning jumpers.
Season 2023-24 outlook
The dam of 'Ellis' - the late Ellistrin Belle - was owned
by Ron & Eileen Smith having been bred by The Potassium Partnership.
Ellistrin Belle was actually leased for racing to The Potassium
Partnership for a couple of seasons, before we trained the mare for her owners Ron & Eileen Smith from the start of the
2014-15 season. And we were delighted to win a Sedgefield handicap
hurdle in November 2015 and follow up with a win in the
same race a year later.
The Smith's had kept Ellistrin Belle as a broodmare in their own
paddocks on the outskirts of Hawick.
In 2018, she was sent to Clovis du Berlais and 'Ellis' is the resultant foal.
Ellistrin Bay was in training here at Dodlands for a few months in the Spring of the 2022-23 season. He also had a spell in the yard the previous year so was well acquainted with the yard set up and morning routing.
A bumper debut had been expected around about the turn of the
year but unfortunately Ellistrin Bay picked up an injury which
required some attention and box rest so may miss this season.
