The family
Dumbarton is the first foal of the high class racemare Scottish Stage, who was trained by Sir Michael Stoute. She was Listed placed over 7f as a 2yr old, and trained on to better that form at 3, where she won a Listed race before being runner up in the Ribblesdale Stakes (Group 2) at Royal Ascot. Her best performance came in the Irish Oaks, again filling second place to O'Brien's Alexandrova.
And Scottish Stage has tasted success as a broodmare, although yet to
produce any racehorse as good as herself.
She has bred seven foals, 6 runners and 4 winners on the flat, 2 of
which have also gone on to win over hurdles. Thus far, arguably
Dumbarton is the best of her progeny.
The second dam, Drama Class, is without doubt a high class broodmare. As well as Scottish Stage, she has produced 2 other Stakes winners, and 6 winners in total to date. The other Stakes winners are Eleanora Duse (Group 2 winner in Ireland) and Voice Coach (Group 3 placed in Australia).
About the sire
Danehill Dancer (b h 1993) was a top class racehorse, trained at Newmarket by Neville Callaghan. He raced 4 times as a 2yr old, winning 3 races including the Group 1 National Stakes at The Curragh. In the next couple of seasons he turned in some smart performances over sprint distances but only won once more, Newbury's Group 3 Greenham Stakes.
Being a half brother to 3 other Stakes winners, it was no surprise (albeit after a slow start) that he became a top class sire, with his fee rising to e110,000 in 2008. He has had tremendous success as a sire of top class 2yr olds but with the likes of Mastercraftsman, Choisir and Where or When showing that Danehill Dancer's progeny do train on with success in top class races throughout Europe.
He is, of course, by that great sire of sires Danehill who has an impressive list of sons at stud - with Dylan Thomas, Westerner and Mountain High being the best of his NH Stallions.
As with all of the Ballymacoll Stud Farm bred horses that are put into training, Dumbarton started off his career under the care of Sir Michael Stoute, where he won one of his 4 races at 2 and 3. Upon leaving Stoute's yard, he next appeared under the care of Gordon Elliott, racing in novice hurdles. Indeed he interspersed hurdling with appearances on the flat, on the beach at Laytown and all-weather at Dundalk.
For the 2013 flat season, he transferred back to England under the care of
Phillip Hobbs and he recaptured the best of his flat form being
placed twice before finishing 4th in a handicap hurdle, off a BHA
mark of OR127.
Acquired by Jimmy Moffat for £5,000 at the Doncaster HIT Sales in
August 2013, he has raced for the Northern handler over the last
couple of seasons in handicap hurdles. Although not winning, he has
been placed on numerous occasions at distances ranging from 2m to 2m 6½f,
although it would appear he has been difficult to keep sound in the
last year, with only one race (a second place at Cartmel) in the
last 18 months.
He was picked up at Doncaster Sales last September by his current
owners (The Six Thix Syndicate) with a view at going Point to
Pointing and indeed was with Gemma Anderson over by Carlisle with
this in mind.
However, a change in heart by his owners saw Gemma recommend
Dodlands Steading as a yard to try him out again under Rules over
hurdles.
Well, he has been given considerable time off by his patient owners
with a view of letting time be the healer as regards his soundness
and Dumbarton has certainly been working with promise on the gallops
since he came into the yard in April.
We keep our fingers crossed and look to give him a few outings over
the summer months, but we would not want to risk him on fast ground.
