The family

Borders Dream  is the first foal out of the unraced Oasis Dream mare Songseeker, and hails from an excellent black type family. The dam is a half sister to Grande Melody, a Group 2 winner in USA and two other winners in France. The third dam is Crystal Spray, who has produced a whole host of top class horses. Including -

  • Dubai Success, winner of the Group 3 John Porter Stakes (short heading Gamut)
  • Crystal Music, winner of the Fillies Mile (Gr 1) as a 2yr old at Ascot
  • Tchaikovsky, third in the Irish Derby
  • Solar Crystal, Group 3 juvenile winner, later placed in Cheshire Oaks
  • State Crystal, a Lancashire Oaks winner, and placed in Prix Vermaille

More recently, top class winners from the family include Ocovango, Zelzal, and Sparkling Portrait. And in 2016, Songseeker had a filly by Mukhadram, and was then covered by Poet's Voice.

About the sire

Dream Ahead (bay horse, born 2008) was a brilliant sprinter over 6-7 furlongs when trained by David Simcock at 2 and 3 years of age. He won 3 races as a juvenile including the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes.
Dream Ahead won a further three Group 1 races as a 3 year old, culminating in probably his finest moment when beating Goldikova to win the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp over 7 furlongs.
He finished 2011 by being crowned the Champion 3yr old sprinter in Europe (having also been joint champion 2yr old in Europe with Frankel the previous season).

He was retired to stud in 2012, standing at Ballyinch Stud in Ireland and after 5 seasons there, he moved across the channel to France to the Haras De Grandcamp stud in Normandy.

Dream Ahead is recognised as a leading young sire of his generation, and is responsible for several winners of Stakes races to date.
The best of these are Donjoun Triumphant, Final Frontier, Basileus and the exciting, top class 3 year old colt in 2017, Al Wukair

Dreamy Gallop Photio
Form Summary

The idea of acquiring a horse for the summer months on the Flat had been nurturing in a couple of the owners' minds here at Dodlands Steading for some time. Various thoughts were muted - an unraced 3 year old or a lightly raced maiden from the Horses In Training sales at Newmarket or Doncaster. Or maybe an inexpensive breeze-up horse (a 2yr old)?
Thus, the Upwards and Onwards Partnership was formed early in 2017, and using a contact in Ireland, there were a few horses sourced and considered before this 2 year old colt by Dream Ahead was acquired.

Deal done, 'Dreamy' arrived at Dodlands Steading at the end of May. He had in fact cost 46,000 gns when he went through the sales ring at Newmarket as a foal, so there had been a fair bit of optimism in his early years. Pre-acquisition, It was understood that the intention had been to prepare the 2 year old colt for entry into one of the many breeze-ups held during the late Spring of 2017, but he hadn't proved quite forward enough in his preparation to have been able to do himself justice.
While that initial plan didn't come to fruition, he'd obviously then been roughed off to mature and strengthen and by the time he came into our stable he was quite unfurnished in appearance, but such a lovely natured horse.

Over the next couple of months, Borders Dream settled into the stable really well, and gradually put on condition which he attained by a healthy appetite and morning workouts with our BHA75 rated, 9-time winning mare Wor Lass.

Come August '17, the anticipation of a debut run was growing within the Upwards and Onwards partnership. Borders Dream sailed through his stalls test with a fairly laidback attitude, and a debut run, probably over 6 furlongs, was penciled in for late August.
His pedigree gives signs that he may be best at around a mile, but the initial few runs will tell us more, so here we go............
