The family

Bonny Houxty is a daughter of the Mtoto mare Izons Croft who was placed a couple of times in Point-to-Points. Mtoto is, of course, the sire of the late, top class NH sire Presenting.
Izons Croft was raced by Bonny Houxty's owner Bill Aitchison, and he also bred Bonny Houxty. The broodmare's 2015 foal (Maid of Houxty - a full sister to 'Bonny') has been in training at Dodlands from the 2020-21 season and another half sister Houxty Reiver joined the yard in 2021.

The 2nd dam, Sticky Money has bred 3 winners over jumps, the best of which has been Magic Money a 6-time winner over hurdles and fences, who was also listed placed over fences.
A little further back in the pedigree under the 3rd dam Cover Your Money can be found the Grand National winner Red Marauder and his brother Red Striker who won both The Dipper Chase and Peter Marsh chase.
A stout pedigree!

About the sire

Native Ruler (bay horse, b 2006) was unraced at 2 but was trained by Henry Cecil to win a Pontefract 10f maiden at 3 years of age. His racing career was restricted by injury but undoubtedly he showed his best form at 5 when finished a very close 2nd to Dandino in the 12f Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket.
He achieved a Timeform rating of 119 at his peak.

He is extremely well bred, being a son of the excellent Cape Cross (sire of Sea The Stars, Golden Horn etc.) out of Love Divine, who was trained by Henry Cecil to win the Oaks in 2000.
As such, he is a half brother to the high-class St. Leger winner Sixties Icon.

Native Ruler has stood at Batsford Stud since 2012, where his fee has risen to £1,500 in 2019. From very limited opportunities, he has bred winners on the Flat and over jumps.

Form Summary

Season 2022-23 outlook

Last season Bonny Houxty posted a couple of 4th places from 7 outings.
The mare is still a maiden but has been placed numerous times. She starts the season on a handicap of OR77, which is about 30lb less than her opening rating of a couple of years ago.

Bill Aitchison's strong, good-sized mare re-joined the yard in September but we'll take things slightly easier with her preparation considering that she has been racing up until the end of May. She should re-appear in late November.
She is on a lenient mark especially if she can find a return to the form of her initial jumps season.

Profile....
Towards the end of the 2018-19 season, owner-breeder Bill Aitchison sent us his then 6 year old mare Bonny Houxty.
Prior to arriving at Dodlands, "Bonny" had already had a few runs in the (British) Point-to-Point field - starting in an Alnwick Point-to-Point bumper for experience, then over jumps in April 2018 and in March 2019. Her last Point was at Friars Haugh over 3 miles, where she ran well for a long way before unfortunately falling 2 from home.

So Bonny Houxty was a fit horse when she came to us that following Spring (2019), and we managed to squeeze in a racecourse debut in a bumper at Hexham during May (racing keenly before being outpaced in final 2f to finish 5th) before returning to her owner for a break.

Bonny Houxty wasn't seen on the racecourse until early Spring of 2020 when, back at Dodlands, she ran 3 times in mid-distance hurdles running into a place on each occasion. Her first run was the best when, despite some untidy jumps, she ran 3rd beaten just over 2 lengths by a couple of 118-rated mares at Carlisle over 2m 3½f.

Much the same story in the 2020-21 season with Bonny Houxty running 3 times in Spring - a couple of placed efforts without showing the same level of her previous form.

Led, ridden and hard pressed when not fluent 2 out, headed and weakened approaching last
Bonny failed to build on the promise of her Hexham run; she made running, but found no extra approaching the last

30 April 22 Hexham 2m 7½f Cond'l Jockeys Hdcp Hurdle (Class 5 0-105) OR 81 good 15 ran (T Gillard) - 5th (beaten 9l)                              video
Led, not fluent 2nd, mistake 4th, headed and pressed leader 5th, pushed along 2 out, ridden and lost second home turn, lost position approaching last, held and edged left run-in
Bonny took a small step back in the right direction; a bit one paced, held every chance.

Prominent, led 8th, headed and lost position before 3 out, soon outpaced, beaten after 2 out
Bonny was a bit disappointing here.

15 February 22 Ayr 2m 4½f Cond'l Jockeys Mares Hdcp Hurdle (Class 5 0-100) OR 86 heavy 13 ran (O Brown) - 5th (beaten 8¼l)            video
Led till headed 6th, remained close up till outpaced after 4 out, ridden and stayed on one pace from 2 out
We blame ourselves here as there are not too many 0-100 mares only handicap hurdles in the North. Bonny Houxty ran well here but 3 miles would seem the minimum trip these days.

line

1 February 22 Newcastle : 2m 6f Cond'l Jockeys Handicap Hurdle (Class 5) OR 88 good 16 ran (Theo Gillard) - 4th (beaten 11¼l)           video
Close up,  every chance 2 out, soon ridden and outpaced, stayed on the one pace run-in
While not quite up to the form of her debut season over jumps, this was a fine run from Bonny Houxty nonetheless. On this sound surface, the trip didn't provide a sufficient test of stamina for her to contest the finish but watch out for her once the deluge arrives.......

17 November 21 Hexham : 2m 4f handicap hurdle  (Class 5 0-100) OR 93 good to soft 8 ran (Craig Nichol) -   pulled up                               video
Tracked leader, not always fluent, ridden and every chance 2 out, weakened approaching last, stumbled flat and pulled up
We'd thought 'Bonny' would need this race but she's ran well and only weakened away from contention at the top of the hill turning for home. She stumbled after jumping the last (behind at the time) and Craig wisely pulled her up. She's fine though.

12 May 21 Perth : 3m novices handicap hurdle (Class 5 0-100) OR 98 soft 10 ran (Theo Gillard (5)) - 9th  (beaten 47l)                                   video
Midfield, pushed along and weakened after 3 out
3 April 21 Carlisle : 2m 3½f Amateur Riders handicap hurdle (Class 4 0-110) OR 101 good to soft 8 ran (C Wood (7)) - 4th  (beaten 19l)      video
Prominent, hit 4 out, outpaced 2 out and soon ridden, weakened approaching last
Not bad but Bonny didn't seem to appreciate the drying ground.

line

11 March 21 Carlisle : 2m 1f Mares Novices Hdcp Hurdle (Class 5 0-105) OR 102 soft 9 ran (B Campbell (3)) - 4th  (beaten 20l)                      video
Disputed lead, headed and tracked leader after 1st, lost second 3 out, soon pushed along, weakened 2 out
Bonny Houxty ran prominently for a large part of this run, her seasonal debut, before lack of a previous outing told from 2 out. This should have set her up nicely for the remainder of the season, possibly over a bit further. Oh, and jumping was much improved.

line

16 March 20 Kelso : 2m 6½f Mares Novices Handicap Hurdle (Class 4 0-110) OR 106 heavy 7 ran (C Whillans) - 4th  (beaten 7l)            video
Prominent, close up when mistake 4 out, not fluent 3 out, soon ridden, rallied approaching last when mistake last, no extra run-in
Bonny Houxty has run a fine enough race here, just didn't quite have the pace to challenge 2 out. She's done well this season though.

line

3 March 20 Newcastle : 2m 4½f Novices Hurdle (Class 4) soft (heavy places) 7 ran (C Whillans (3)) - 3rd  (beaten 5l)                                      video
Held up in rear, not fluent 1st and 4th, headway to chase leaders into home straight, stayed on but not pace to trouble winner
Bonny Houxty would have appreciated a faster pace here, and couldn't quicken to the extent of the first two in the home straight. Her jumping is getting better though.

line

3 February 20 Carlisle : 2m 3½f Mares Novices Hurdle (Class 4) heavy 7 ran (C Whillans (3)) - 3rd  (beaten 2¼l)                                              video
Held up in rear travelling well but not always fluent, good headway after 3 out to track leading pair appr last, mistake, kept on well near finish
A fine first run over hurdles for Bonny Houxty. As a three-time faller in local Points, the mare's jumping would always come under scrutiny here. She did make a few mistakes but ran exceptionally well going down by just over 2 lengths to a couple of OR118 rated horses. Sure to improve.

line

11 May 19 Hexham : 2m Mares NH Flat race (Class 5) good to soft 9 ran (C Whillans (3)) - 5th  (beaten 25l)                                              video
Took keen hold, in touch, driven along and outpaced over 3f out but kept on final 2f
Promising Rules debut for Bonny Houxty. In this fair bumper for the course, she ran quite keenly for the majority of the race but was tapped for toe as the leaders set for home 3f out.
